Mercury Electric Mower

Mercury Electric Lawn Mower c. 1950s

Built in Australia in the 1950’s by the Mercury Electrical Products company, this mower boasted sleek, “futuristic” styling and a lightweight, rust proof aluminium body. Popular due to its quiet motor and low weight, this mower is an important early example of electricity being applied to lawn and garden maintenance.

Today gardeners use a wide range of electrically powered tools and appliances to care for their gardens. From powered hedge clippers to robotic mowers, these appliances owe much to the development of early models like the Mercury.
