War Through the Lens

Recommended for Year 3 to 8

For as long as New Zealanders have been at war there have been cameras recording the events. You can find photographs from the New Zealand Wars in the 1860s all the way to the Afghanistan War that started in 2001.

Photographers have played an important part in these conflicts because they are responsible for documenting the experiences of those that fought and died for their country. Beyond that, photography helped the public to come to understand the horrific toll that war inflicts on those involved.

Check out this resource that goes through the history of war time photography. It covers what cameras were used and what photos were taken. Afterwards, test yourself by taking the quiz that we have created for you!
